WHAT IS A PALTELET GEL

THE PALTELET GELgel_1.jpg
is a blood component which is rich of blood platelets which are, in turn, rich of “growth and healing factors”.
Following enrichment of the platelet fraction (usually by centrifugation of small quantity of anticoagulated blood) the clot formation (gelation) is induced by adding of calcium and procoagulant substances (thrombin or batroxobin).

The platelet-rich gel (Platelet Gel) is then applied to the lesion. Immediately after the application, the growth and healing factors released from platelets reach the cell within the lesion hence inducing prompt biologic response leading to acceleration of tissue regeneration and healing.

GLOSSSARY
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): Platelets concentrated up to tenfold the original blood concentration

Platelet releasate: Inner platelet content extracted through platelet activation (e.g thrombin-activated platelets)

Platelet lysate: Inner platelet content extracted through platelet dissolution or destruction (e.g freezing)

Platelet Gel: PRP and fibrin network blended together to obtain plastic, malleable blood component for topical application

Growth factors: Dozens of bioactive molecules, mostly contained in and released from blood platelets. Receptors for these molecules are present on tissue cells. Growth factors recruit tissue cells within the lesion area and stimulate theme to prolifertate and tissue to regenerate and heal.
